Information Required for Car Title in Virginia

When getting a Vehicle Title in Virginia, there are several pieces of information and forms that are required for the DMV to issue a Car Title.

Peed to complete form VSA 17a (https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/sites/default/files/vsa17a.pdf)
provide a Bill of Sale for the vehicle
You will need to provide proof of address in Virginia
Complete the certification of buyer section on the car title provided by the seller

Once this information has been submitted, there are fees required before the Department of Motor Vehicles in Virginia can issue a Vehicle Title. These fees are:

$15 titling fee
Sales and Use Tax

Finally, when a vehicle is sold or transferred, the seller must record the odometer mileage. This is typically done in the assignment section of the title. The buyer then records the mileage on the title application form.

Lien Release in Virginia

When you finish paying off your loan, make sure this is noted in the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles records. This can be done in two ways:

If the lender is part of the Virginia Electronic Lien Program, they can electronically release the lien with the DMV. Once completed, a car title will be mailed to you.
If the lender is not part of the Virginia Electronic Lien Program, the lender will mark the title as “satisfied” and mail the title directly to you. You will still need to update the Virginia DMV records by doing the following:
- Bring the title marked as “satisfied” to the DMV
- Pay fee of $15

Once completed, the DMV will issue a new title to you.
