Car Titles | Lien Release | Texas

A car title is necessary to establish legal ownership of your vehicle. You will need it if you plan to sell, transfer, register, or insure it. This includes donating it to a non-profit or otherwise gifting it. When relocating to Texas, you must register your car within 30 days. If you do not have your car title, there is a process to obtain it, which we have outlined below. You can go through the process on your own, but if this is not something you want to take on, we can help. Click the link below to get started with our expert team at CarTitles.com.

Texas Car Title Requirements

There are several key requirements to obtain a new or replacement car title, including:

  • Original title
  • Application (Form 130-U) for:
    • Damaged car title replacement
    • Deceased owner car title transfer
    • Out-of-state vehicle title transfer
  • Form VTR-34 for:
    • Duplicate car title
    • Replacement car title
    • Lost car title
  • Proof of Texas liability insurance
  • Valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license
  • Current vehicle inspection along with emissions tests as required by specific counties

There are also several fees associated with the title recovery process:

  • Title fee ($28-$33)
  • Registration fee ($74)
  • Sales tax (6.25% of purchase price or present value)

Depending on your location, you may also need to pay Road & Bridge, DPS, and other minor inspection fees. Check with your local DPS office to confirm.

Texas Lien Release

The lien release verifies that there are no other claims of ownership on your car. If you had a loan on your vehicle, but you have recently paid it off, your lienholder will likely notify the TxDMV electronically within 10 business days. You will receive a new paper title from TxDMV with the prior lender’s information removed. However, if your lender does not do this electronically, then you will receive your paper title directly from them. They will either sign the back of your title, or they will send a separate lien release document on their letterhead. You can then use that document to apply for a new, clear title.

What is the lien removal process for a vehicle titled in Texas?

The lienholder (your lender) is required to release their lien within 10 days of your final loan payment. Generally, they will do this electronically by sending the information to the TxDMV. The TxDMV will then mail your new paper title to you. If you instead receive a lien release document from your lender, then you will need to bring that letter and a completed Form 130-U to apply for a clear title.
