A car title is necessary to establish legal ownership of your vehicle. You will need it if you plan to sell, transfer, register, or insure it. This includes donating it to a non-profit or otherwise gifting it. When relocating to Texas, you must register your car within 30 days. If you do not have your car title, there is a process to obtain it, which we have outlined below. The lien release verifies that there are no other claims of ownership on your car. If you had a loan on your vehicle, but you have recently paid it off, your lienholder will likely notify the TxDMV electronically within 10 business days. You will receive a new paper title from TxDMV with the prior lender’s information removed. However, if your lender does not do this electronically, then you will receive your paper title directly from them. They will either sign the back of your title, or they will send a separate lien release document on their letterhead. You can then use that document to apply for a new, clear title.
