Car Titles | Lien Release | South Dakota

You will need your car title if you are about to sell your vehicle, or if you are transferring ownership. You also need your current car title if you move out of state, because you will be required to register your vehicles in your new state. There are some other cases to consider as well, such as needing to transfer a deceased owner car title to a new owner. No matter why you need to obtain a copy of your car title, CarTitles.com can take this burden off of your plate. Our teams are experts at South Dakota’s requirements. Though you can do this on your own—and we have outlined the process below for you—if you decide you want help, click the link below.

South Dakota Car Title Requirements

You will first need to complete the following forms and gather the needed details:

  • Motor Vehicle and Boat Title & Registration Application (Form MV-1001) for:
    • Damaged car title replacement
    • Out-of-state vehicle title transfer
    • Duplicate car title
    • Replacement car title
    • Lost car title
    • Deceased owner car title transfer
  • Original title
  • Proof of ownership (bill of sale)
  • Odometer disclosure if vehicle is 20 years old or newer
  • Valid driver’s license or state ID
  • Out-of-state title and registration if relocating to South Dakota

South Dakota also has several fees associated with the title recovery process:

  • Title fee ($10)
  • Lienholder notation ($10)
  • Technology fee ($2)
  • Non-resident fee ($100, if no SD driver’s license, ID, or address)
  • Late penalty ($1 per week after the 45-day registration period, up to $50)
  • Mail-in service fee (varies by county, up to $25)
  • Excise tax (4% of purchase price)
  • License plate reassignment ($7)
  • County wheel tax (based on number of wheels on vehicle, amounts vary)

South Dakota Lien Release

When you pay off a vehicle loan, your lender is required to provide you with proof that they no longer have a claim on that vehicle within 20 days of the final payment. There are two options for this; first, the lender can sign the original title and mail that to you. Otherwise, the lender can provide a separate lien release document. Regardless of the method for the lien release, you will take that along with your current title to the DMV to apply for a new, clear title. Some lenders will notify the DMV electronically, and send you a paper title.
