In New York, you have 30 days to register your vehicle. To do this, you will need to complete Form MV-82 and show proof of ownership, valid New York car insurance, and your photo ID. The fee for this process varies based on your vehicle’s weight and fuel type, but it is generally between $30 and $100.
The fastest option to replace a lost car title is to do so online. You can also visit your local DMV office in person or by mail, using the Application for Duplicate Title (MV-902). You will need your photo ID and the $20 fee to complete the process. Reach out to our team if you would like us to handle this request for you.
Complete Application for Duplicate Title (MV-902) and submit it in person or by mail to the DMV. You can also complete this process online. Note that this is just for replacement titles for vehicles that were already titled in New York. If your title is still registered out-of-state, you will need to refer to that state’s requirements, and then follow the process to transfer it to New York.
A surviving spouse or next of kin can transfer the vehicle’s title by completing a notarized Affidavit for Transfer of Motor Vehicle (MV-349.1). You will also need the car’s original title, proof of insurance, and the death certificate. If the vehicle’s present-day value exceeds $25,000, you will also need court-issued Letters Testamentary. Take these documents to your local DMV or submit by mail to the Title Bureau in Albany.
You will need to apply for a duplicate title to replace your damaged one. You can do this online, by mail, or in person at your local DMV location. There is a $20 fee for this. Once your application is processed, you should receive your duplicate car title in 7-10 business days.
