Your title recovery process begins with gathering the necessary paperwork. Below is a general guideline for the forms and information you will need to initiate your vehicle title request:
New residents need to register vehicles within 30 days of moving to Mississippi. Visit the DOR website for additional information.
There are also several fees associated with the vehicle title recovery process:
The lien release is a critical piece of the title recovery process if you have recently paid off a car loan. Once you own the vehicle outright, you need to have your lender–the former lienholder—sign off to verify they no longer have a claim to it. To do this, contact your lender in writing to request the lien release, along with a Release of Lien form or a Letter of Non-Interest. Your lender will sign and return the release form, and you can then send all of this information to the DOR to request a new title.
There are several hurdles to getting your vehicle title transfer completed—from missing paperwork to issues with getting the proper sign-off from your lender, there are a lot of moving parts to the process. If you want an easier way to get your title, CarTitles.com would love to work with you. You will need to visit the local Tax Collector’s office to register your vehicle in Mississippi. Take your current out-of-state title, your photo ID, and proof of insurance, along with a completed Mississippi Application for Title and Registration (Form 78-005). You must complete this process within 30 days of establishing residency. You will need to pay $9 for the title fee, along with applicable tag/registration fees, which vary by county and the vehicle’s value.
You will need to fill out Form 78-006 (Application for Replacement Title) and submit it to the Department of Revenue (DOR), along with the $9 fee. You can also use the Fast Track program to complete your request more quickly. The lost version of your title will be voided once the replacement title is issued.
Complete Form 78-006 (Application for Replacement Title) and mail it to the DOR, along with the $9 fee. You can also utilize the Fast Track option, though that fee is $39. If you use the Fast Track, you will receive your replacement car title within 72 hours as opposed to the standard 3-4 week turnaround time by mail.
The process for a deceased owner car title transfer will vary depending on whether there is a will, and if there is a surviving spouse. If you are the surviving spouse, you can complete the transfer by signing the title and submitting the death certificate to the DOR. If there is no will, next of kin will need to fill out Form 78-014 (Affidavit–Owner Dies WIthout a Will). If the estate is in probate, the executor will need to provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration along with the current vehicle title.
You will need to fill out Form 78-006 (Application for Replacement Title) and send it and the $9 fee to the DOR. You can also utilize the Fast Track option for quicker turnaround, but the fee is $39.
