Are you getting ready to sell your vehicle? Did you recently pay off a car loan? Are you considering purchasing a vehicle from another individual? Did you recently inherit a car from a relative? Are you making an out-of-state move? All of these scenarios are just a handful of examples where you need to obtain a clear car title, which is your legal proof of ownership. Whatever the reason you need it, our team is ready to make the process quick and easy.
If you plan to navigate this process on your own, follow the steps we have outlined below.
Obtaining a vehicle title starts with the necessary paperwork and information. To begin, you will need the following:
Louisiana requires owners to register their vehicles within 40 days of purchase to avoid penalties.
Additionally, you will need to pay several fees:
Check with your local parish for any variations to the above-listed amounts.
Your lender will initiate an electronic lien release through the ELT (Electronic Lien & Title) system. This lien release signified that the loan has been paid in full, and there is no longer a lienholder on the title. The Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) will then generate a new title with you as the owner, and that will be mailed to the address they have on file. We recommend confirming your lender has your most current address on file to prevent delays. You can also call your lender to verify the lien release has been initiated. If you are unable to reach the lender, you can send a written request for a Letter of Non-Interest or Lien Release for Paid-Off Vehicle and use these to file a Lost Title Application with the OMV.

You’ll need a certified copy of the death certificate, as well as the vehicle’s current title and legal proof of the ownership transfer. Typically, when you pay off your loan, the lineholder (lender) will use the electronic ELT system to initiate the transfer of that information to the OMV. Once the OMV processes this information, they will generate a new title with the old lender information removed. That title will be mailed to you. If this does not happen automatically, you will need to contact your lender. If you cannot reach your lender, or if you have any other difficulties with the lien removal process, give our team a call.
