Car Titles | Lien Release | Kentucky

The car title establishes legal ownership of the vehicle in question, and it signifies there is no lien against it (such as a car loan). Likewise, if you are selling your vehicle, you will need a clear title to do so. These are just a couple of reasons why you may be trying to obtain a copy of your vehicle title. Other scenarios could include needing to transfer a title after moving out-of-state, or even transferring a deceased owner’s car title into the new owner’s name. Whatever the reason, our team is ready to make the process quick and easy.

If you want to navigate the vehicle title recovery process on your own, we have outlined the process below.

Kentucky Car Title Requirements

Before you can get your vehicle’s title, you need to complete some paperwork and gather important details, including:

  • Signed, notarized title
  • Application for Title/Registration (TC96-182) for:
    • New car titles
    • Lost car titles
    • Damaged car titles
    • Replacement car titles
    • Duplicate car titles
    • Salvage car titles, and more
  • Proof of Kentucky car insurance
  • Valid driver’s license or government ID
  • Social security number for each owner listed on title
  • Odometer reading (use form TC96-5 if not listed on the title)

Kentucky requires owners to register their vehicles within 15 days of purchase. If you are moving from out-of-state, you need your current out-of-state title.

Additionally, you will need to pay several fees:

  • Title fee ($9)
  • Usage tax (6% of the vehicle’s current value)
  • Expedited fee ($25, to get it mailed the same day)
  • Title lien statement ($22)
  • Sheriff inspection fee ($5, for out-of-state vehicles)
  • Notary fee ($2)

Kentucky Lien Release

Once your car loan is paid off, your lienholder (lender) will file a lien termination statement. This is done with the county clerk where the lien was initiated. Alternatively, the lienholder may give you the Original Clerk’s Filing Receipt. You will then take the lien release document or the filing receipt to your county clerk. The clerk will process the release and then issue a new, clear title to you, without the lienholder listed. Some counties also offer online portals to check your lien status.
