To initiate a vehicle title recovery, you will need to begin by locating the necessary forms. You will also need to prove ownership of the vehicle, as well as current insurance. The following is a general guide to what you will need, but you should also check with your local county for any variations to these requirements:
All forms are available on the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles site, at IN.gov.
You will also need to pay several fees associated with your title request, such as:
We recommend visiting the Indiana BMV site for more specifics, as Indiana has a lot of fees that are county-specific.
Once your car loan is paid off, your lender will usually submit the documentation electronically to the BMV. After this is processed by the BMV, you will receive a new title showing you as the sole owner. If this process is not handled electronically, then the lender will sign the lien release section on your physical title or send a separate lien release on their letterhead. You would then need to take this documentation to your local BMV office so they can update their system and issue a new, clear title to you.

Indiana requires new residents to register their vehicles and transfer the titles within 30 days. Your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch can handle this. You will need to complete Form 1014, along with your existing title, a VIN inspection, and proof of insurance and your Indiana address. Indiana charges a $15 fee for this process, in addition to any fees for registration and license plates.
You can apply for a duplicate car title online through myBMV.com, or at your local BMV branch. Use Form 205. You’ll also need to pay the $15 fee. If you prefer, you can also use a BMV Connect Kiosk at select BMV branches, Kroger stores, and other preferred locations.
To replace a car title, use Form 205 via your local BMV office, a BMV Connect Kiosk, or online at myBMV.com. You’ll need to pay the $15 fee and provide a valid photo ID. Note that you cannot use this option if you also need to make any changes to the owner/lienholder on the title.
You will need the vehicle’s current title, a certified death certificate, and either an Affidavit for Transfer of Title, or Letters of Testamentary. Take the documents to your local MBV office. Note that if there is a named Transfer on Death beneficiary, that person must sign for the transfer. If you need any help, reach out to our team at CarTitles.com!
You can replace a damaged car title with Form 205. There is a $15 fee; send the form to the BMV, or go to your local office in person. You can also complete damaged car title replacements at a MBV Connect Kiosk.

Once your loan is paid in full, your lender (lienholder) has seven business days to deliver the title to you. This should be an automatic process, but call your lender if you do not receive the title with the lien release information. In cases where the lender is no longer in business, you will need to get a court order to request the BMV to remove the lineholder’s information. If you need help, just let us know!
