To initiate the process, you will need to contact your lender or lienholder. Lien releases can be done via hard copy or electronically. Once you receive the lien release document, you need to submit it to the state DMV so officials can update their records. Once recorded, the state will issue you a new, clear title.

To register an out-of-state vehicle in Florida, you will need to prove you have Florida car insurance. You will also need your original car title or registration and Form 82040. Additionally, plan to pay between $225 and $300 for the initial registration and title fees. Florida requires new residents to complete this process within 10 days of establishing residency.
You need to replace your car title if you lose the original, so you can maintain your proof of ownership. Complete Form HSMV 82101 and take it to the county tax collector’s office, either in person or by mail. Florida requires that you fill out the Application for Duplicate or Lost Title (HSMV 82101). You’ll need a valid ID, and you need to pay the required $75.75 fee. You can do this online or via mail; your replacement title should arrive in as few as five business days with expedited processing.
You will need the death certificate, the vehicle’s current title, and a completed Form 82040. If a surviving spouse is completing the transfer, then Form 82152 will be required instead. If there is no will or probate, you will need to sign an affidavit stating the transfer is agreed upon by the estate.
Fill out Form HSMV 82101 and submit it to your local county tax collector’s office. You will also need your photo ID, and the damaged version of your title. Florida’s fee ranges, but will be approximately $76. The tax collector’s office will mail you a new title in five business days.
