Your car title lien release signifies that your lender has been repaid in full, and therefore no longer has a legal claim to your vehicle. Once you finish paying off the loan, your lender will notify the DMV—typically within 10 business days. Lenders using the electronic system, ELT, will notify the DMV directly, and the DMV will send you a new, paper title without the prior lender information listed. If your lender does not use the ELT, they will mail you the original paper title with their stamp and signature on the back. You can then take this along with the other documentation outlined above to the DMV for a new, clear title.
