When a car loan is paid off, your lender will either sign and return the original title to you, or send a separate lien release letter, which proves your loan has been paid in full. Rhode Island does not require that you apply for a new, clean title, but you must keep the lien release letter with your title to prove ownership when needed. If you lose your title, you will need to request a duplicate title using the TR-2/TR9 form linked above. You will need your lien release letter as well.
