Car Titles | Lien Release | Iowa

Vehicle titles are legal proof of ownership. You need that title to be able to buy or sell that vehicle, and to register your ownership of it with your state or county. Whether obtaining new car titles, replacing damaged car titles, or transferring a deceased owner car title, if you are in need of title recovery, we make the process quick and pain-free. At CarTitles.com, we bring solutions to your car title frustrations.

We’re here to help, but if you want to tackle this process on your own, we have provided guidance below to get you started.

Iowa Requirements for Car Titles

To begin the process of your vehicle title recovery or acquisition, you will need the following information and completed paperwork:

  • Title signed by seller
  • Application Form 411007 from the Iowa Department of Transportation
  • Bill of Sale including buyer and seller’s names, VIN, purchase price, date of sale, and signatures of interested parties
Odometer reading (for vehicles under 10 years old, or with fewer than 100,000 miles)
  • Damage Disclosure Form 411108 (if vehicle has less than 1,000 miles and has significant damage, or in cases of rebuilt titles)
  • Form 411033 for replacement of a lost car title
  • Valid identification, such as driver’s license

You will also have several fees to pay as part of the title request, including:

  • Title fee ($30)
  • Vehicle registration (varies by vehicle age and value)
  • Sales tax (6% state sales tax, plus any additional local taxes)
  • Replacement title fee ($35 for obtaining a duplicate car title)

These fees are paid at your county’s treasurer office.

Iowa Lien Release

The vehicle lien release is initiated once the car loan has been paid in full. There are two ways this can be done:

  • Electronically: the lender will release the lien electronically as soon as the loan has been repaid, and the Iowa DOT will send you a new paper title
  • Paper Title: The lender will stamp and sign it once the loan is paid, and then send that to you; otherwise, you may receive a separate lien release document

If your lender released the lien electronically, you will need Form 411168 to submit a request to the DOT for the title to be updated. If you received a signed release from your lender, then you will need to complete the Application for Replacement of Iowa Certificate of Title (Form 411033). This can be done at your local treasurer’s office.
