Indiana Requirements for Car Titles

To initiate a vehicle title recovery, you will need to begin by locating the necessary forms. You will also need to prove ownership of the vehicle, as well as current insurance. The following is a general guide to what you will need, but you should also check with your local county for any variations to these requirements:

  • Signed title (or MCO, which is the manufacturer’s certificate of origin)
  • Bill of Sale Form 44237
  • Valid ID
  • Proof of valid insurance on the vehicle
  • Application for Certificate of Title (Form 1014)
  • State Form 205 for damaged car title replacement

All forms are available on the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles site, at IN.gov.

You will also need to pay several fees associated with your title request, such as:

  • Title fee ($15-28)
  • Sales tax (7% of the vehicle’s purchase price)
  • Annual excise tax (varies based on vehicle’s value and age)
  • Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Fee (TIIF) ($15)
  • License plate fee (varies by county)
  • Other county fees (vary by location)

We recommend visiting the Indiana BMV site for more specifics, as Indiana has a lot of fees that are county-specific.

Indiana Lien Release Requirements

Once your car loan is paid off, your lender will usually submit the documentation electronically to the BMV. After this is processed by the BMV, you will receive a new title showing you as the sole owner. If this process is not handled electronically, then the lender will sign the lien release section on your physical title or send a separate lien release on their letterhead. You would then need to take this documentation to your local BMV office so they can update their system and issue a new, clear title to you.
